NYC Child Lead Poisoning Down, But Rate Still Too High

In 2012, there were 923 reported cases of New York City children suffering lead poisoning. The City's health department reports that this figure reveals a 66 percent decline from 2005 and evidences an improvement in lead poisoning prevention. There were 1,183 children poisoned by lead in 2011.

Thousands Of Nursing Homes Fail Federal Fire-Safety Laws

According to federal regulations, all nursing homes must have automatic sprinkler systems installed throughout their buildings. There is an obvious need for the law, as nursing home residents are typically more vulnerable to smoke and flames than other Americans. In general, seniors are more likely to be slow-moving or suffer from mental confusion in an emergency, so fire sprinklers are a necessity - not a luxury.

Family Of Victim: Bronx Club's Negligent Security Lead To Death

In July 2012, a 28-year-old man was enjoying himself at Whisper's Lounge, a Bronx night club, when he got into an altercation with another patron. That patron was carrying a concealed firearm that he shot into the stomach of the man, causing fatal injury.

Faulty Railing Causes NY Woman To Fall 17 Stories To Her Death

A 35-year-old woman was on a first date at her Upper East Side apartment when she stepped outside for a cigarette. Her date followed her onto the balcony and was horrified when the railing she was perched on suddenly gave way, bending into a "v". The woman tumbled backward and fell 17 floors to her death.

Roller Coaster Fatality Horrifies Nation

A woman was riding a roller coaster with her son when the unthinkable happened: Her restraint failed. Moments earlier, witnesses said they heard the victim, Rosy Esparza, tell an amusement park employee that she didn't hear her T-bar restraint click twice, as it was supposed to.

A 66-year-old man was killed in a tragic accident at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The patient was crushed by a gamma camera during a routine diagnostic procedure. Nyack College Explosion Injures 7, Answers Won't Come Soon Enough

What caused the Nyack explosion that injured seven people on Tuesday morning? The answer will follow a lengthy investigation into the apparent accident, but it seems that a damaged gas pipeline is the likely culprit. The suspect gas pipe is located beneath a construction site with ongoing excavation, fueling speculation that heavy construction equipment caused the damage.

Premises Liability Case Against Casino Dismissed

I read in the law journal today about a premises liability case that was recently dismissed. The plaintiff was a woman who tripped over a wheelchair as she was getting up from a slot machine at a casino. The wheelchair was pulled off to the side, with the wheels partly jutting out into the isle where the woman was seated. The wheel chair was not owned by the casino. The Court found that the casino wasn't liable because it didn't place the wheelchair there, or had any notice that it was there.

Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning is a significant environmental disease.  89% of the apartments in Manhattan's Inwood and Washington Heights communities contain lead based paint.  If lead paint is found in an apartment the landlord is required by law to remove, abate, encapsulate the lead paint.  It requires that the work be done by licensed professionals.   Lead poisoning can result in severe brain damage to an infant.  If lead paint is found in the apartment remove the children until the woek is completed.  NYC Department of Health provides safe-houses where people can stay with their children during the renovation of the apartment.
