Know what to do if you get doored

Bike lanes are intended to protect from moving traffic, but when you're cycling so close to parked cars, there is another hazard that's equally dangerous. "Dooring," a collision that happens when a motorist or passenger opens a door into oncoming bike traffic, is both a common and a costly accident. It's also easily avoidable and cyclists are protected by New York City law.

Too many cyclists are dying in New York City

2016 has been a terrible year for cycling deaths and injuries in New York. Saturday marked the twelfth cycling death the city has experienced this year. The New York Times reports that Matthew von Ohlen, 35, was intentionally struck down and killed by a black Chevrolet Camaro as he biked home to Brooklyn from his bartending job in Manhattan.

Bono's Bike Accident Evidences Danger Of NYC Cycling

Cycling in Central Park can be a dangerous, a notion that U2 frontman Bono can agree with. The rock singer crashed his bicycle in November after nearly colliding head-on with another cyclist. He recently stated that he may never play the guitar again.

New York City Considers Texting-While-Cycling Law

The impact of driving a motor vehicle while distracted is well documented, but there is very little data about the impact of cyclists who bike-and-text. It is presently legal to text-message while riding your bike in NYC, a practice that some legislators are aiming to end.

Did The 'Safe Routes To School' Program Deliver Results?

In 2005, a federal program known as Safe Routes to School gave U.S. cities an opportunity to improve the safety of children walking or cycling to and from school. The program was cut by Congress last year, so now is a great time to examine what impact it had on New York City schoolchildren.

Visiting New York City

Its Super Bowl weekend in New York! There are thousands of people here from outside NYC for the Big Game. Unfortunately, automobile and cab accidents may happen, there may be a fall on a sidewalk or inside a premises, and some of those visitors may suffer injury.

Putting A Face To The Name Of The Latest MTA Bus Accident Victim

The New York Times published an interesting piece about the man who recently died in a bicycle-bus collision on West 125th Street in Harlem. Victim Pedro Santiago, 45, was an ambitious Mexican immigrant who made friends from all walks of life. He wanted to become an engineer, and took classes at Columbia and Hofstra Universities. He regularly sent money back to family members in Mexico.

Bicycle Accidents

Failure to wear a bicycle helmet is dumb, even for adults.  Research has shown that bicycle accidents account for more traumatic brain injuries each year than football injuries.  The American Association of Neurological Surgeons found that bicycle accidents played a role in about 86,000 of the 447,000 sports related head injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2009.  Football accounted for 47,000, baseball 38,394.  Cycling was also the leading cause of sports related head injuries in children under the age of 14 causing 40,272 about twice as many as football.
