New Yorkers love cycling. The growing number of cyclists and bike paths along with the city’s infrastructure investment can attest to this. And within this cycling culture, there also has been a boom in electric bike (e-bike) ownership as sales for these faster and sleeker vehicles have skyrocketed in the past two years.
E-bikes have grown more attractive to consumers due to lighter frames and increased safety features. What is not to like about these environmental-friendly bikes that can reach speeds of up to 30 mph? But remember, safety remains essential in any form of cycling.
Greater chance for serious injury
A 2019 report published by the Injury Prevention medical journal noted that e-bike riders have a greater chance of more severe injuries compared with riders of regular bicycles. The report also noted that 17% of e-bike victims sustained internal injuries compared with 7.5% of users of scooters and traditional bicycles.
Finally, e-bike injuries were three times as likely related to a collision with pedestrians compared with scooter or regular bicycle injuries.
Stay alert and follow traffic laws
E-bike riders may ensure improved safety by:
- Following traffic laws, including stopping, yielding and not speeding.
- Wearing a helmet. This may help you avoid serious head injuries.
- Staying more alert to your surroundings. This may help avoid crashing into pedestrians.
- Remaining vigilant for distracted drivers. More people are driving and using cellphones, primarily talking and texting. Do your best to stay away from them.
