Triathlon preparation requires careful planning in New York City

Training for a triathlon requires more than just countless hours of sweat and endurance. You should also take safety considerations into account when planning your workouts. For both aspiring and accomplished triathletes in New York City, training must be effective and safe.

As you're preparing for your upcoming event, follow these tips to avoid getting sidelined by an accident or injury.

Planning your route

The route that you choose to run or ride is important. Ideally, avoid the busiest areas of the city during rush hour. Find less crowded routes or train during quieter hours.

Ride in dedicated bike lanes (or bike paths) whenever possible. If you're biking on streets with parking lanes, beware of parked vehicles. "Dooring" - that is, colliding with a driver or passenger as they open a parked car door - is a prevalent cause of injury and death among cyclists.

When you're planning an open-water swim, make sure somebody knows when and where you are going. Consider bringing a friend (or fellow triathlete) so you have someone watching out for you.

Getting yourself and your gear ready

Before hitting the road, take a moment to look over your gear. Ensure that your bicycle is in good working order. Consider equipping your bike with a hydration system that's easily accessible. Bring along ample water and nutrient-dense snacks. Additionally, whether you're running or biking, make sure you dress for the weather.

Staying safe while on the road

Follow the rules of the road while you're out. It might be tempting to improve your splits and avoid interruptions by speeding through intersections or ignoring crosswalks, but do so at your own peril. Always ride defensively and follow safe cycling practices. It's far better to err on the side of safety rather than getting an injury that could derail your training.
