Unfortunately, hit-and-runs are a daily occurrence in New York City. This phenomenon is especially sad when the wrongdoer is an officer sworn to uphold the law and protect NY citizens.
Detective Carlos Sierra, 36, may have thought he got away with a Bronx hit-and-run collision that occurred in December 2012, but it appears that justice will be served as Sierra was recently arrested on four misdemeanor charges, including:
- Leaving the scene of an accident
- Criminal mischief
- Official misconduct
Sierra is presently suspended by NYPD without pay.
A hit-and-run is usually a cowardly attempt by the driver to escape liability for a car accident. In addition to breaking the law, however, it often leaves injured victims without help. When serious injury occurs, minutes and seconds can make the difference between life and death.
If you or someone you care about has been seriously harmed in a hit-and-run, you should speak with an experienced NYC accident attorney. Although you cannot file a lawsuit until you find the wrongdoer, a skilled lawyer can help preserve evidence, prepare your case for litigation, and even help to investigate who may be responsible.
