Ambulances are designed to quickly, but safely, get people to hospitals during health crises. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out as planned for a patient in the back of an ambulance recently travelling through Sunset Park. A van collided with the ambulance, knocking it on its side.
At least three people were seriously injured in the crash and taken to Lutheran Hospital, including the patient who was being transported.
Police are still investigating the Brooklyn accident to determine the cause.
Emergency vehicle (EV) accidents involving ambulances, fire trucks or police cars often occur when the driver fails to follow safety protocol. EV drivers are typically given a strict set of rules to follow, which balance urgency with safety. When these rules are disregarded, the risk for an accident with another motor vehicle greatly increases.
If you or someone in your family has been seriously injured by the negligence of an ambulance driver, firefighter or police officer, an experienced NYC auto accident attorney can help you learn your legal rights. In many of these accidents, the victim needs to file a notice of claim or he or she forfeits the right to file a lawsuit.
