Tips for subway safety

Whether a person is a New York City resident or a tourist, riding the subway can be convenient and fun. As with any form of transportation, it is not without some risk. However, by taking precautions, a person can enjoy a ride that is faster and safer than other methods of getting around the city. According to NYCByNatives.com, during 2014 an average of 2.5 million people rode the subway on weekdays. That guide suggests planning routes ahead of time to give a person the freedom to navigate the system more easily and safely. Knowing where to exit can allow passengers plenty of time to access the doors and avoid needing to rush.

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides more safety guidelines to reduce the risk of injuries when taking advantage of this popular form of transportation. For example, any type of door that is in the process of closing may crush or cut a hand or other extremity. This includes both elevator and subway car doors. If clothing is caught by a car door and a person is unable to get free, he or she may be dragged until the conductor stops the train. No one should ever attempt to squeeze through a closing door.

Subway platforms are designed to drain safely by means of a tilt toward the tracks. If there is a liquid or other slick substance present, people may find it more difficult to maintain or catch their balance if they slip or trip on these surfaces. At all times, a person should stand well behind the yellow strip along the platform edge while waiting on a train, so that if there is an accident, the risk of falling onto the tracks is not as high. Just as with any other form of transportation, observing safety protocol on the subway system is essential to avoid an accident.
