Preventing child injuries on the playground

When you take your child to a playground, you expect your child to have a great time exploring, running and playing. If a child is left unsupervised or if the playground equipment is not maintained properly or designed correctly, a serious injury can occur.

Here are some quick tips to help parents and others keep children safe while at the playground:

-- Check the shape of the playground equipment. Is there rust, exposed screws or nails or pieces that appear loose? Wood should not have splinters and plastic pieces should not be cracked.

-- Is there shade available on metal pieces? A burn can happen quickly when metal is exposed to sunlight. Always check such pieces to see if your child could suffer a burn injury by sitting down or playing on the equipment.

-- What type of material is under the equipment? There should be no glass or pieces of trash. The material underneath should be made of a surface that will absorb shocks, such as sand, shredded rubber or mulch.

-- Is the playground equipment age-appropriate? In many cases, there are different areas of the playground that are made for different age groups of children. Keep children in the right area to avoid possible injuries from the equipment and also from faster, older children.

-- Have you discussed how to play safely at a playground with your child? You should make sure to teach your child to take turns, not push another child and to keep the supervisor (such as a teacher or parent) in sight.

These are just a few safety tips to help keep children safe on the playground. If your child is injured because of another person's negligence, then you may have a cause to seek compensation on his or her behalf.
