Who is most likely to drive while drowsy?

By now, most people are aware that driving while drowsy is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. Did you know, though, that over-the-road truck drivers aren't the ones that are most likely to drive while drowsy?

The actual group of people who are most likely to have an accident while they are driving drowsy are teenagers. One in five accidents that result in a fatality have a drowsy driver who is between 16 and 24 years old, says the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine wants to change that.

Their campaign is called "Awake at the Wheel," and the hope is that their National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project will connect with parents who have young drivers. They want parents to talk to their teenagers about the dangers of driving while drowsy.

If you're not quite sure what all the symptoms of drowsy driving are, here's a few to share with your teenagers and young drivers:

-- You are unable to keep your eyes open or you continually yawn.

-- The last few miles that your drove are something you don't remember.

-- Your head keeps nodding.

-- You missed your turn or road signs.

-- You hit the road's "rumble strip," shoulder or the other lane.

-- You end up getting too close to motor vehicles in front of you.

Getting enough sleep doesn't just have a positive eaffect on a teenager's driving. It can also help improve athletic performance, grades and health.

Those who are injured in an accident with an overly fatigued driver do have recourse. They can seek compensation through the civil court for their damages and injuries.
