Misdiagnosis stats show gains, but malpractice still an issue

Misdiagnosis of serious medical conditions is a problem that continues to rise to the top of the list of concerns for both patients and physicians themselves. Trends in New York City medical malpractice claims indicate that specific conditions are more likely to be misdiagnosed when compared to others. In general, experts say that malpractice cases tend to involve strokes, heart attacks, infections, meningitis and sepsis, among others.

These facts underscore the dangers of texting while driving

By now drivers throughout New York are probably aware that distracted driving is a serious problem. State law prohibits use of handheld portable electronic devices while driving. More specifically, texting while driving is banned.

Tips on subway safety

It doesn't matter if you're a commuter who is on the subway or a visitor to New York City for the first time, subway safety is important. Following safety tips can help prevent injuries while entering, exiting or riding the subway. Here are some tips to help subway riders:

High-tech auto accident prevention system tested in New York City

A new system designed to improve traffic safety by warning drivers about hazards and congestion will make its national debut in New York City. The system, designed to prevent car accidents by providing motorists with additional information, will be funded by a $20 million pot that will improve access to connected vehicle technologies throughout the region. The pilot program will have its start in midtown Manhattan, one of the busiest and most dangerous traffic environments in the nation.

Dangerous parking spaces force city council to introduce bill

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio implemented Vision Zero in an effort to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and injuries. In a related move, the city council has a bill pending now that could remove at least 200 parking spaces close to crosswalks throughout the city.

Vote supports new bike lanes on St. Nicholas Avenue

The Manhattan Community Board 12 transportation committee was recently asked to vote on the creation of new bike lanes that will run down St. Nicholas Avenue, and they gave the proposal a vote of support. The Washington Heights area has already seen the creation of new bikes lanes out by the High Bridge, and the lanes in the proposal would link the two areas together.

Could driving for your job kill you?

Many people drive as part of their job duties on a regular basis. Professional drivers are specially trained to operate vehicles such as buses, big rigs and dump trucks, but millions of people who aren't trained operate standard vehicles on a regular basis. Workers might drive smaller trucks or cars to make deliveries or travel between work locations, for example. Regardless of training or the reason for driving on the job, roadway accidents can occur and can be fatal for employees.

Officials: Limit New York City car accidents with new signals

New York officials are calling for a significant increase in the number of left-hand turn signals that are installed on area traffic lights, saying that their communities would be safer if this simple change was instituted. Government leaders are saying that a vast number of New York City car accidents could be avoided entirely if better signals were installed at key intersections.

New York's 'Right of Way Law' 1 year later

It's been a year now since the "Right of Way Law" in New York City went into effect. A cornerstone of the Vision Zero initiative of the city's mayor, Bill De Blasio, the legislation made harming bicyclists and pedestrians who have the right of way a misdemeanor for motor vehicle operators.
