Tri-State Report Lists New York's Most Dangerous Streets

Broadway is the deadliest street for New York City pedestrians, according to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. Broadway was the site of nine pedestrian fatalities from 2010 through 2012. Why are there so many pedestrians hit by cars on Broadway?

"It's very wide, there's a lot of traffic and there's too large a crossing distance for pedestrians," said Veronica Vanterpool, Tri-State's executive director, in an interview with NY Daily News.

Broadway's stretch at W. 99th Street and above is particularly deadly, accounting for seven of the nine fatal pedestrian accidents.

Queens' Woodhaven Blvd. did not fare much better than Broadway as it accounted for eight pedestrian fatalities during the same three-year stretch.

Flatbush Ave. is Brooklyn's deadliest road, where six pedestrians died from collisions from 2010 through 2012.

There are four streets that share the title of deadliest road in the Bronx, each with four pedestrian deaths: White Plains Road, Fordham Road, East Gun Hill Road and the Grand Concourse.

Mayor de Blasio has a lofty, perhaps unrealistic, goal of eliminating all pedestrian fatalities within 10 years. He sure does have his work cut out for him, as NYC has an array of roads that need major reform before they'll be safe for pedestrians.
