Suffolk County Accident: Three Children Hit In Crosswalk

A 35-year-old mother was helping her three children cross the street when a SUV slammed into them. Suffolk County police said the children and woman were lawfully using the crosswalk when a Chevy Trailblazer driven by a 49-year-old man hit and injured them.

Brooklyn Motorcycle Accident Kills Passenger; Taxi Cab Flees Scene

A 37-year-old woman is dead after a motorcycle accident on a Brooklyn highway. The victim was a passenger on a BMW motorcycle driven by a 42-year-old man when he lost control of the bike and struck the center median of the Belt Parkway. His passenger was ejected over the median where she collided with an oncoming taxi cab.

Suit Seeks $40 Million For Botched 911 Call Leading To Death

The lives of a 4-year-old girl and her grandmother hung in the balance while a 23-year-old Emergency Medical Services (EMS) worker denied their incoming 911 call and punched out of her computer terminal. This irresponsible and unforgivable act caused a 4-minute, 18-second delay in the response of New York City ambulances - which took an additional 3 minutes and 52 seconds to reach the victims. Errors that contributed to the death of the little girl, Ariel.

Bronx VA Clinic Patient Crushed By Falling Medical Equipment

A 66-year-old man was killed in a tragic accident at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The patient was crushed by a gamma camera during a routine diagnostic procedure. The Infinia Hawkeye 4 gamma camera involved in the fatal accident weighs more than 5,000 pounds. General Electric (GE) Healthcare manufactured the camera and is responsible for its maintenance.

NY Texting-While-Driving Tickets Only Succeed 44 Percent Of Time

New York police officers have a difficult time citing motorists for unlawful acts of distracted driving. Typically, police have to catch the offender in the act to write a ticket, or cite them when they've learned that an auto accident was caused by a cellphone. But law enforcement isn't the only area of government struggling to make New York's texting ban impactful.

SUV Jumps Curb In Midtown, 6 Pedestrians Injured

On Friday, a SUV jumped a curb at Fifth Ave. and E. 46th St. and barreled into a group of pedestrians. The vehicle hit six people, including a child in a stroller. Concerned bystanders rushed the vehicle after it stopped to ensure that no further bloodshed occurred.

Bicycle Accidents

Failure to wear a bicycle helmet is dumb, even for adults.  Research has shown that bicycle accidents account for more traumatic brain injuries each year than football injuries.  The American Association of Neurological Surgeons found that bicycle accidents played a role in about 86,000 of the 447,000 sports related head injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2009.  Football accounted for 47,000, baseball 38,394.  Cycling was also the leading cause of sports related head injuries in children under the age of 14 causing 40,272 about twice as many as football.

Nyack College Explosion Injures 7, Answers Won't Come Soon Enough

What caused the Nyack explosion that injured seven people on Tuesday morning? The answer will follow a lengthy investigation into the apparent accident, but it seems that a damaged gas pipeline is the likely culprit. The suspect gas pipe is located beneath a construction site with ongoing excavation, fueling speculation that heavy construction equipment caused the damage.

Citi Bike Program Launches; Skeptics Point To Manhattan Crash

After much debate and planning, New York City launched North America's largest bike share system this week. The bike share program allows people to use Citi Bikes for short periods of travel. The cost is $95/year; daily and weekly passes are also available, which may prove popular with tourists. Not everyone is pleased with NYC's Citi Bike program, however.
