Lead Poisoning

Lead poisoning is a significant environmental disease.  89% of the apartments in Manhattan's Inwood and Washington Heights communities contain lead based paint.  If lead paint is found in an apartment the landlord is required by law to remove, abate, encapsulate the lead paint.  It requires that the work be done by licensed professionals.   Lead poisoning can result in severe brain damage to an infant.  If lead paint is found in the apartment remove the children until the woek is completed.  NYC Department of Health provides safe-houses where people can stay with their children during the renovation of the apartment.

NYPD Pedestrian-Crash Report Shows Dismal Start To 2013

The New York Police Department (NYPD) recently released a new crash data report and the numbers are discouraging. During the first quarter of 2013, 45 pedestrians and cyclists were killed by New York City motorists. This number is a sizable jump from the same period in 2012, when 33 pedestrians died. The injury toll is up, too.

Unsafe Generic Drugs can prove hazardous to your health.  Product Liability litigation is dynamic.  Generic Drugs are being prescribed with increasing frequency.  Health Insurance companies are demanding that their insureds use them instead of the more expensive brand name drugs.  A recent US Supreme Court opinion ruled that generic drug manufacturers cannot be held accountable for failure to warn consumers about the deadly side effects that taking the drugs may cause.

FDA Recalls Ventilators for Children

Potential for Medical Malpractice where the FDA Recalls Ventilators for Children because of a software defect.  The ventilators could prove fatal to infants because the oxygen consumption was being miscalculated.  Hospitals would be guilty of malpractice if a child suffered brain damage as a result of the defective ventilator where they knew of the recall and where they did not warn parents of the potential harm that could exist for their children.

Driver Faces Homicide Charges After Fatal L.I.E. Pileup

Last October, a series of auto accidents on the Long Island Expressway (L.I.E.) caused the death of a respected Nassau County police officer. The driver responsible for the tragic pileup is now facing increased criminal charges, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.

Immigrant Killed In New York Construction Accident

A 24-year-old man recently died in a construction accident in upstate New York. The victim, an Irish immigrant, was unloading a 1,700 pound pipe from the back of a flatbed truck when the pipe shifted and fell onto him, pinning him to the ground.

NYC Hospitals A Source Of Medical Malpractice

Hospitals remain hazardous to your health.  Consumer Reports found that 27 of the 28 teaching hospitals in the New York City region scored below the national average.  It was thought that teaching hospitals would be the best place for treatment.  Hospitals scoring poorly were Kings County Hospital;  Bronx Lebanon; Jacobi Medical Center;  Harlem Hospital.  The areas covered by the survey included readmissions, complications, infections, communications and overuse of CT scans.

Police Catch Brooklyn Hit-And-Run Driver After He Hit Pedestrian

A 25-year-old male was seriously injured in Brooklyn on Tuesday night, after a car hit him and fled the scene. The pedestrian collision occurred in Flatbush at the corner of Ocean Parkway and Foster Avenue. The victim was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

It's hard to keep up with all the pedestrian crashes in New York City that have occurred over the past several days. The unacceptable pedestrian-accident rate has continued, and may even be accelerating.

Brooklyn Taxi-Van Crash Injures 11

At least 11 people were injured Thursday morning when a "dollar van" and taxi collided in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood. The crash occurred at Lefferts and Rogers Avenues. Accident-scene photos published by the Daily News show that a third vehicle, a sedan, crashed into a light pole.

Mother and Son, 2, Severely Injured By Car On Brooklyn Sidewalk

A 2-year-old boy will never be the same after a Brooklyn pedestrian crash on Saturday. The boy's family members stated that he suffered serious head trauma and will probably remain brain-dead for his entire life. His mother was also severely hurt and remains hospitalized in a semi-comatose state.
